Giving deaf children a voice

Welcome to Voices by the Sea

Nearly every deaf child is capable of learning to speak. Voices by the Sea is here to help.

Serving children in the San Diego Area with face-to-face and tele-practice options.

Voices by the Sea promotes the acquisition of spoken language for children who are deaf/hard-of-hearing. We utilize an approach called Auditory/Oral Education or Listening and Spoken Language. Our deaf/hard-of-hearing children learn to communicate by listening and talking. No sign language is used in our program.

Voices by the Sea builds a partnership with parents to build age level language and communication skills that prepare their child for successful academic learning.

Voices by the Sea offers Professional Development Opportunities for teachers and therapists working with deaf/hard-of-hearing students who are learning to communicate by speaking. (Auditory/Oral DHH students)

Meet Our Founder

Susan Aaberg, M.Ed., Director

“It has been my privilege and delight to have spent more than 40 years teaching little deaf children how to listen and talk, and helping their parents navigate this new world of “Oral Deaf Education”. Through my journey, I have met amazing parents who embody LOVE by doing what they believe is best for their child, even when inconvenient, challenging and emotional. These parents tell me that raising a deaf child is challenging and takes hard work, but it is worth it. The joy of listening to their deaf child talk is priceless.”

Susan’s Background

Susan has over 40 years of experience teaching in both private and public school settings. Susan holds degrees in Early Childhood Education (B.A.), Deaf Education (B.S.), Integrated Teaching through the Arts (M. Ed) and Orff Schelwerk (Level 1).
